Foundations: the first 90 days of a new technician

A new hire learns the building, the patient flow and the basic workup before touching a certification track. Eighteen modules in the order a trainer would teach them, and a readiness check your practice can hold them to.

Foundations ends where the COA track begins, and its orientation walks a new hire through the routes to sitting the COA, so the next step is clear from the first week.

Who it is for

  • New technicians in their first 90 to 120 days, before they start studying for the COA.
  • Cross-trained staff moving from the front desk or scribing into clinical work.
  • Trainers, as the curriculum they sign skills off against.

Your practice decides who takes Foundations and what score counts as ready.

START YOUR JOURNEY

Your trainer is with another patient, and a technician asks you to run a test your trainer has not yet walked you through. What is the expected response?

FACILITY, EQUIPMENT & WORKPLACE SAFETY

A few minutes after a drop goes in, a patient's lips start to swell and she says her throat feels tight. How is this handled?

TRIAGE & CLINICAL FLOW

A patient was grinding metal without safety glasses and now has a scratchy eye with only mild pain. What makes this an immediate call?

SLIT LAMP EXAM & ANTERIOR CHAMBER ANGLE BASICS

With a penlight held at the temporal limbus and parallel to the iris, you see a shadow over the nasal half of the left iris. What does that suggest?

TONOMETRY & PACHYMETRY FUNDAMENTALS

A colleague hands you a freshly disinfected tonometer tip that is still visibly wet. What do you do?

Common questions

Foundations questions practices ask

How long does Foundations take?

It is written for a new technician's first 90 to 120 days, alongside hands-on training with a designated trainer.

Is Foundations a certification?

No. It is onboarding. Its 100-question readiness check tells your practice whether a new hire has the basics, and it leads into the COA track.

Can we assign it to front-desk staff moving into clinic?

Yes. Assignments are per person, so a cross-training staff member can take Foundations while the rest of the front desk works in Patient Access.
